A Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma of Spinal Cord

Abstract

|
A plemorphic xanthoastrocytoma has been known as a very rare brain tumor, mainly in the temporal lobe of the brain in the young ages. The neoplasms involved both the leptomeninges and the superficial cortex, displayed marked pleomorphism, including bizarre giant cells with prominent lipid droplets and a number of mitotic figures, but no necrosis. Immunoperoxidase stain is important to demonstration of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the tumor cells. These tumors as astrocytoma was furnished by positivity of the GFAP stain. There have been several reports of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma in the brain, but not yet in the spine. This article is the first presentation of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma occurring in the spinal cord.
